CAUSE

According to the 2019 “State of the Education Report for India: Children with Disabilities” records, there are 78,64,636 children with disability in India constituting 1.7 percent of the total child population.
The common challenges we find while working with the differently- abled:
Lack of understanding/comprehension as compared to her/his own age group -> Unable to communicate her/his needs when compared to other peers of her/his age group -> Have difficulty in doing daily activities or have difficulty in understanding routine instructions -> Have extreme difficulty in making decisions, remembering things or solving problems -> Stammers to such an extent that the speech is incomprehensible ->Have difficulty in social interactions and adaptability->Disabilities like “Autism” etc. (Difficulty in communicating, interacting with others; unusual & repetitive behaviors etc)

EFFECT

One of the most noteworthy projects that we initiated at TejasAsia is Project Hope in 2018. The idea was modeled by Marvel Philip. This was commenced for the differently abled children identified in Tughlakabad Community in New Delhi, India where our first Hope School & Community Programs were established. Bearing that in mind, a special curriculum designed by the Californian Department of Education for differently abled children was introduced in Project Hope program. Our teachers & team members were trained to take this great vision forward to help more children who need the additional support and help.

We believe, the setback faced by the differently-abled children should not hold them back from what they could be capable of achieving. There should be more opportunities for the differently/specially-abled children.

IMPACT

We currently run this special program at the Hope School for our children who are differently-abled. We can already see a great impact the way they have responded so well to the services & support provided to them in such a short time. Our goal this year is to invest into 15 children & support more children in the near future. We want to add more classes and run a fully trained structured program with help of professionals & volunteers. We want to see our staff trained well so that they can contribute immensely in the lives of these precious children.

That’s our dream!

We believe, children who are differently- abled deserve as much care and scope to grow and learn and develop in the surroundings they live in.

27% Of Specially-Abled Children Aged Between 5-9 Years Have Never Been To School In India: UNESCO

One of the most noteworthy projects that we initiated at TejasAsia is Project Hope. The idea was modeled by Marvel. This program is aimed at ensuring children with special needs, from low income families have access to special educational materials, therapy resources, and technologies. Bearing that in mind, a special curriculum designed by the Californian Department of Education for Autistic Children was introduced in the school on tablets. This curriculum made it easier for the kids to get on with their schoolwork. Teachers were trained to take it forward to the lives of many children.

our Impact Stories

the story of jyoti

16 years old, Tukhlakabad

Jyoti is 16 years old and is living in Tughlakabad village with her parents. She had to drop out of her regular school because of the intellectual challenges she faced as a young child. She has trouble with co-ordination and this forces her to depend on her mother for everything daily, like changing her own clothes, eating her food, help with studies etc. Jyoti will keep on repeating the same sentences again and again. She was struggling with certain words in Hindi & English.

Jyoti’s mother heard about the Hope School run by TejasAsia in their neighborhood and got her enrolled at our School seeking help to support Jyoti’s overall development. Jyoti started coming to Hope School about 5 years ago. She needs special attention from her teachers due her condition. Project Hope was launched at the Hope School by TejasAsia focusing more on children like Jyoti, with special needs, to build them up. Jyoti adores being part of Project Hope as this program gave her an identity and helped her in her studies and overall development.

As soon as the teacher enters the classroom, Jyoti will come and stand beside her teacher and will start sharing stories about her and her family. She never hesitates to listen to her teacher. She is very obedient and completes all School-work given to her. Jyoti is not much into indoor activities but loves playing outside. Jyoti and her mother had to face a lot of challenges because of Jyothi’s condition. At some point, Jyoti wasn’t allowed to go out of her house as her mother feared people could manipulate her. Her safety was very important especially as she couldn’t really communicate or express herself well to others.

Our support team at Project Hope did not give up on her and they were willing to invest into her life. Jyoti’s life has changed forever now! She has grown a lot, she expresses well, and she is a good student at the Hope School supported through the ‘Project Hope’ program for the differently abled.
