Jyoti

16 years old, Tuglakabad

Jyoti is 16 years old and is living in tuglakabad village with her parents. She had to drop out of school because of the intellectual challenge she faced. She has trouble with coordination and this forces her to depend on her mother to even do simple chore like changing her own clothes. It is hard for her to use words such as ‘and’, ‘or’ and so on.

Jyoti will keep on repeating the same sentence again and again. Then her mother enrolled Jyoti for Hope School run by TejasAsia because it was just beside their home and it was convenient for the mother to run to her anytime.

Phope was launched in the Hope School by TejasAsia targeting kids like Jyoti to build them up into an independent, self-sufficient being. Jyoti adores being part of Phope since it gave her an identity and helped her to understand more about the world. Also she loves to be the teachers’ favourite in the class. As soon as the teacher enters the class she will come and stand beside her start sharing stories about her and her family.

Regardless her age Jyoti becomes the youngest child in Phope. Jyoti is not a big fan of indoor activities but loves playing outside. However, she never hesitates to listen to her teacher. She is very obedient and completes all work given to her. Due to her age, it hasn’t been easy to break some of her habits and make her do some of the things on her own, but still we could see moderate changes in her in the course of time. Jyoti and her mother had to face a lot of challenges because of her condition. There was a period of time in Jyoti’s life where she was not allowed to go out of the house because the mother was afraid that people can take advantage of her. Our local team of TejasAsia did not give up on her but did regular visiting and counselling to Jyoti and her mother until Jyoti could come back to school. She is very expressive in everything she does and the team loves her for that.
