HOPE BUSES

CAUSE

According to a survey report called the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), more than 50% of the students in 5th standard attending rural schools are not capable of reading a second standard textbook and do not know how to solve basic mathematical questions. These rural areas struggle with local transportation. The problem of local transportation gets added up with schools being at a distance, which results in NO SCHOOL for most children.

EFFECT

One of the most successful projects we have come through are our Bus Projects. With the idea of Education on Wheels, we let out buses in different locations of Delhi, gathering kids inside the buses, teaching them how to read, how to write, reciting rhymes with them and teaching them songs of hope and aspirations. At the end of the teachings we also provide them with meals.

IMPACT

We have 4 buses that go out in different locations and each bus has the capacity to hold 60 kids. We have a total of 480 kids that are fed everyday and are taught with the supplies on our end. Given how well we have done with our Bus Project we undoubtedly would like for more buses to be added subsequently.

Each time our buses pull into these locations there are evident smiles all around and excitement in the air with something new that the kids would be looking forward to.

our Impact Stories

the story of himanshu

6 years old, kirti nagar

Himanshu is a six year old boy living in the slums of Kirti Nagar. Himanshu’s father, Pramod, is a labourer and mother is a housewife. Himanshu suffers from a very bad condition in his bones which has obstructed his growth and weakened his bones. His condition has restricted him to rely greatly on others. He requires the support of people around him to move from one place to the other.

According to Himanshu’s mother he was born with a lump on his back. When he was just eight months old he had to undergo a surgery to remove that lump but unfortunately that surgery had negative side-effects on Himanshu’s physical stature. Since then the growth and development of his body started to lessen. His mother left her job so that she could give all her time and attention to tend to Himanshu’s needs. With another baby on their hand it became absolutely impossible to manage the household. So in the already tight financial situation that the family was in, they lost an earning member of the family.

Our Asha Mobile School Bus began visiting the slum that Himanshu lived in. This gave Himanshu a chance to attend school, study and learn just like other ordinary children. His physical conditions should not be holding him back from achieving whatever he wants in life and he definitely needs to have a fair shot at education.

Himanshu’s regular attendance in the Asha School Bus and his outstanding performance in all the assigned work proves that no syndrome can stop him from achieving his dream, which is of becoming a Police officer. Doctors say that Himanshu can be cured through surgery but it might cost a fortune for the family. So the Father is working really hard to gather money for the surgery. It remains a desire for the family to see their child completely healed.

Every single day Himanshu comes to the bus with his beautiful smile, ready to learn something new. He loves making friends and is always down to have fun. He takes each day at a time and we want to stand with him in his desire to become an outstanding man one day.
